Just For the Single Dad

02/20/2012
Several years ago a friend of mine dedicated a song on the radio to all the soldiers fighting in Iraq. I didn't know at the time that she was depressed. She told me a few days previous that she was jealous of my freedom as a single mom. At the same time I envied her for he good fortune in having several healthy, beautiful children and a husband who treated her kind. Months later, her husband came home from Iraq. But his wife never picked him up from the airport. Instead when he called after his flight had landed to ask where she was, she told him she had left him for another man and she was pregnant with his child. There are a lot of single dads. Some don't get the option of seeing their kids after the divorce. And some have to make it on their own with full custody of their kids. They have to work, get them to school, and if they have girls, they learn to braid hair. Not exactly a male expertise. So for all the single dads out there, this section is for you.

Custody Rights
02/21/2012

When my ex and I first split up, he didn't even bother fighting for custody. I always wondered if he really loved them. He told me, that he never fought for custody because he knew "the kids would be 'better off' with me." While I would love to take that as a compliment, I believe fathers have every right to be a part of their kids lives. They need the presence of a father to teach them about the world. This same man, who refused to fight for his boys is putting in quite a battle for a little girl he had. I am not suggesting anything untoward. Both boys and girls need their dads.

It seems society has placed a favorite on mothers when granting custody.  There are terrible wars being wages on the rights of fathers. The ones suffering the most are those kids. Sadly there are woman out there who only seek to manipulate the system. Custody rights for fathers should be just as valid as it is for mothers. Most states won't provide welfare benefits to single fathers as readily as they for single mothers, which makes the job of parenting and staying afloat even harder. So dads, don't give up on your rights, even though its a constant struggle, those kids needs you. There is help out there, I will help you find it.
